One of my favorite parts of camping is exploring the trails! Nederland is a great place for both camping and hiking, and it's quieter setting made me feel like I was really out in nature.
Rainbow Lakes campground is a popular place to go, and is the first place I've stayed in Nederland. The best part of this site is that it has two amazing trails that are very close by: Arapaho Glacier Trail & Rainbow Lakes Trail.
Rainbow Lake Trail is a short, easy level hike that is pretty popular. The trail runs along several small lakes, and doesn't increase in elevation too much. Since this is right by the campsite, it's easy to access and has some good views.
Arapaho Glacier, on the other hand, is a much longer hike. It's moderately difficult, but has much more increase in elevation. The great thing about this one, is there are multiple "tops" you can reach. You can keep going from there, or head back, and still you get to see a rewarding view! This hike was one of my favorites. Towards the "top" of the trail overlooking the lakes, we ran into heavy snow, even in the middle of June! It wasn't too hard to climb and work around, but we definitely lost the real trail. Regardless, this is one I strongly recommend! The views from where we stopped were so stunning.
Camping here was a lot of fun too! The campsite is first come first serve, and only has around 15 sites. If you're wanting to try out this campsite, come early. We came the weekend it opened, and faced a line of cars at around 9:30. We got one of the last spots and were so lucky!
The drive to the campsite is on a decently long dirt road, but otherwise getting there is not much trouble. If Nederland isn't too far from you, try to make the trip! If it is a little farther, try camping somewhere! They have lots of campgrounds.
